Abstract:

To provide a process for preparing a 2-arylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid represented by formula I (wherein, Ar is an unsubstituted phenyl or a phenyl substituted with one or more 1C to 6C alkyl or alkoxy groups; and m is 1, 2 or 3).

The process for preparing the 2-arylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid is carried out as follows. o-Phenylenediamine is reacted with a benzoic acid derivative represented by formula II Ar(-X)mformula II äwherein, Ar and m are as described in formula I; and X is a COO-alkyl (wherein, the alkyl is an n-alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms), a COOH, a COCl, a COBr or a CN} in the presence of sulfuric acid at a temperature between room temperature and 250°C.
