The light emitting element comprises an emitter 101 that is provided on a reference surface SS and supplies light, and a structure 102 provided at the emission side of the emitter 101. The structure 102 comprises a reflective polarizing plate 108 that transmits polarization light in a first vibration direction, and reflects polarization light in a second vibration direction nearly orthogonally crossing the first vibration direction; and an optical section 109 that transmits light from the reflective polarizing plate 108, and is formed so that a refractive index changes periodically for a two-dimensional direction nearly in parallel with the reference surface SS.
