An element substrate 10 includes: a fist base material 10a; and a first alignment layer 28 provided between a pixel electrode 27 and a liquid crystal layer 15. A counter substrate 20 includes: a counter electrode 31; and a second alignment layer 32 provided between the counter electrode 31 and the liquid crystal layer 15. In at least a display area, surface roughness of the pixel electrode 27 is larger than that of the counter electrode 31, and a pretilt angle given to the liquid crystal layer 15 by the first alignment layer 28 is larger than a pretilt angle given to the liquid crystal layer 15 by the second alignment layer 32.
