To suppress an irreversible change (deterioration) of a liquid crystal during long term driving.
When driving a liquid crystal display device which displays a picture by applying a potential to the liquid crystal to control the optical characteristic, a still picture state is detected, and the potential to be applied to the liquid crystal is lowered. When a high potential is continued to be applied to the liquid crystal, but the potential is periodically or irregularly lowered momentarily, the irreversible change (deterioration) is reduced to be caused. This is because the direction of electric moment and strength of the liquid crystal molecules are changed only at the moment of the potential change, and one-sided movement of electric charges causing the irreversible change is reduced to occur.
