To provide a reflection type liquid crystal element using transition between two alignment states.
The liquid crystal element comprises: first and second substrates 51 and 54 subjected to alignment treatment; a liquid crystal layer 60; polarizing means 61 arranged at least on the outside of the first substrate 51; a reflecting plate 65 arranged on one side of the second substrate 54 or the outside of the second substrate 54; light diffusing means 64 arranged between the polarizing means 61 and the first substrate 51 or between the second substrate 54 and the reflecting plate 65; and voltage application means for applying voltage to the liquid crystal layer. In the arrangement of the first and second substrates 51 and 54, the direction of the alignment process is determined so that the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 60 are twisted in a first direction. The liquid crystal layer 60 contains a chiral material with the property of twisting liquid crystal molecules in a second direction reverse to the first direction. The voltage application means has a first electrode 52 provided on the first substrate 51, a second electrode 55 provided on the second substrate 54, and a third electrode 58 of a comb-shape formed on the second electrode 55 via an insulation layer 56.
