Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high brightness and high contract ratio by using a polymerizable hardening material containing a specified addition-polymerizable urethane compd. to constitute a resin phase of a liquid crystal/resin composite body having specified refractive index.
SOLUTION: A liquid crystal/resin composite body 7 is held between a pair of substrates 2, 5 having electrodes. This liquid crystal/resin composite body 7 is prepared in such a manner that the refractive index of the resin phase when voltage is applied or not applied is controlled almost same as the normal or abnormal refractive index of the liquid crystal, respectively. The resin phase consists of a polymerized hardened material of a hardening material which contains an addition-polymerizable urethane compd. prepared by using an aliphatic isocyanate compd. having side chains. As for the isocyanate compd. having side chains, 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,6-diisocyanate hexane, 2,4,4,-trimethyl-1,6-diisocyanate hexane and their equivalent weight compound (TMDI) can be used. The addition- polymerizable urethane compd. is preferably a compd. obtd. by the reaction of the isocyanate compd. and polyols.
