PURPOSE: To provide a carving method which can easily form fine letters or a pattern on a stone material or the like with the use of a sand blast process.

CONSTITUTION: When a letter(s), a pattern or the like is formed on the surface of a stone material or the like, a protecting mask solution blended with a liquid compound having a viscosity which is prepared so as to be suitable for screen printing and which is adapted to exhibit a rubber like property after being solidified, is applied over an uncarved part of a surface to be carved of the stone material or the like, by a screen printing process, and is hardened so as to form a protecting mask. Then, a blast process in which abrasive grain is sprayed over a part to be carved is carried out, and thereafter, the protecting mask is removed.
