To reduce drop out and to obtain favorable running stability and durability even if a particulate magnetic substance is used by suppressing projection for a magnetic layer surface from a back layer, in high density recording.
In a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a supporting body and provided with a back layer composed of non-magnetic powder and a binder on the surface the an opposite side of the magnetic layer, the back layer comprises non-magnetic inorganic acicular particles of which average major axis lengths are 5 to 300nm, and also, on the surface of the back layer, a magnetic recording medium characterized in that the number of protrusions of heights of 25 to 100nm measured by an atomic force microscope is 100 to 1,500 pieces per 90μm square is attained.
