PURPOSE: To efficiently manufacture a carbide dispersed titanium base alloy excellent in wear resistance by melting a melting raw material constituted of a Ti alloy or the like in vacuum by an induction heating melting method in which a graphitic crucible is used.
CONSTITUTION: A main raw material such as sponge titanium and titanium alloy scrap and an assistant raw material such as an Al-V master alloy are charged respectively from a raw material charging chamber 5 into a crucible 1 in which the inside is constituted of a graphitic crucible 2 and the outside is constituted of a calcia series crucible 3. Next, the raw material is melted by a high frequency induction coil 4 in vacuum (at about ≤10-2Torr degree of the vacuum) or in the atmosphere of an inert gas such as Ar and He to infiltrate carbon into the molten metal. In this way, a β phase titanium alloy in which titanium carbides are dispersed and having good wear resistance can be manufactured with good productivity. If required, aging heat treatment of retaining in the temp. range of about 350 to 650°C for about 2 to 100hr may furthermore be executed so that α phase titanium can be precipitated.
