To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for a higher recording density, by forming a thin film made of an aggregate of composite particles of carbon and cobalt, and separating the composite particles into cobalt particles and a graphite layer covering the cobalt particles by annealing at a specified temperature.
An ion beam sputtering method is employed as a film forming method, and a carbon plate and a cobalt plate arranged to be adjacent to each other are used as a target. The substrate temperature is set to approximately 200°C, and a cobalt-carbon composite film is produced. Subsequently, by annealing this film at temperatures within the range of 250-500°C in a vacuum, a thin film is provided which has a structure such that cobalt crystals magnetically perfectly isolated by being covered with a graphite layer are dispersed at a high density. Thus, a magnetic recording medium suitable for a higher recording density may be formed.
