PURPOSE: To form a uniform alkali resistant conductive layer on the surface of an electrode to increase various kinds of performance of an alkaline storage battery by forming a layer mainly comprising alkali resistant conductive powder on the surface of the active material of a paste type cadmium electrode, then forming a conductive layer comprising alkali resistant metal on the surface by electroplating.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene glycol solution of polyvinyl alcohol is added to cadmium oxide powder having a mean particle size of 1μ, and the mixture is kneaded to form paste. The paste is applied to a nickel plated perforated steel plate having a specified thickness serving as a conductive supporter and dried at a specified temperature for a specified time to form an electrode having a specified thickness. The electrode is immersed for about 10 seconds in a solution prepared by dissolving carbonyl alcohol in pure water in a specified weight ratio, and dried at a specified temperature to form a layer on the surface of the electrode. Then, the electrode is immersed in a plating bath containing sulfuric acid and nickel chloride, and electroplating is conducted at a specified temperature for a specified time to form a nickel plated layer on the surface.
