PURPOSE: To manufacture a roll usable at high temperature which is excellent in glazing of paper, wear resistance, rigidity and toughness, and suitable for paper machine and the like by hardening and tempering the surface layer of a cast-iron roll mantle.

CONSTITUTION: This roll 10 is manufactured by hardening and tempering the surface layer 12 of the cast iron roll mantle 11 to be deformed into spherical graphite cast iron of ≥60% perlite to form a temper-martensitic structure on the surface layer 12 of the roll mantle 11, and finish-machining the roll mantle 11 by a conventional method.
