The invented mechanical seal is configured by attaching a disk-shaped elastic body (22a) to a tip of each set screw (41) screwed into a screw hole (40) formed on an end part (20b) of a vibration control body (20) and abutting the disk-shaped elastic body (22a) on an outer peripheral surface (6c) of a retainer (6), in which set screws (41) are attached to at least three positions or more in a peripheral direction of the vibration control body (20), and after using the mechanical seal, vibration in a radial direction of the retainer (6) is measured and vibration is controlled so that the vibration of the retainer (6) is minimized.
