To provide a method and an apparatus which can nondestructively, easily and highly precisely evaluate the joined quality of a friction spot weld zone.
This invention relates to the method and apparatus for evaluating a weld zone of friction spot welding in which a first metallic member 11 is superposed on a second metallic member 12 having a higher melting spot than the first 11, with the first metallic member 11 softened by friction heat to cause plastic flow therein through rotation and pressurization of a revolving tool 16, and with the first and the second metallic member 11, 12 joined in a solid state. On flashes R generated on the periphery of a recess of the weld zone P, a range of the flash shape that satisfies joined quality is preliminarily set as an allowable flash range. Then, the flash shape of an evaluation target is measured, so that the normal or defective joint of the weld zone P is evaluated with the yardstick whether the measured flash shape is within or without the allowable flash range.
