To provide a method of assembling a work roll of a rolling mill which is performed by supporting upper and lower work rolls in a cantilever manner with a porter eye of a roll changing device, the method automatically and rapidly assembling the work roll by inserting the distal end of the work roll smoothly into a roll coupler of a spindle.

The method of assembling the work roll of the rolling mill is characterized in that in the rolling mill, the upper and lower work rolls 21 are connected with the roll couplers 24 on the distal ends of cross joint spindles and rotationally driven, each of the spindles 23 is extendable and contractible and has an extending spring 32 in the inside, each work roll is put into the cantilevered state by holding one end of each of the upper and lower work rolls 21 to be assembled with the porter eye 12, and that the height 41 of the drive-side distal end center axis of each work roll 21 is set to be lower than the highest height 43 of the axial center of the cross joint, and the drive-side distal ends 27 of the work rolls are inserted into the roll couplers 24 by moving a roll changing device.
