To obtain a purified epoxy resin reduced in hydrolyzable chlorine content and total chlorine content by treating an epoxy resin containing hydrolyzable chlorine with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a specified mixed purified solvent.
An epoxy resin containing 0.04-2.0wt.% hydrolyzable chlorine and obtained by reacting an active hydrogen compound such as a novolac resin, a polyfunctional naphthol or an alicyclic-structurecontaining phenol with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali catalyst and removing unreacted epihalohydrin from the reaction product is treated with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a ketone or an aromatic hydrocarbon, a monohydric alcohol and a phase transfer catalyst to obtain a purified epoxy resin having a hydrolyzable chlorine content of 70-400ppm and a total chlorine content of 250-800ppm.
