PURPOSE: To reduce cost for refining gas obtd. by the gasification of coal, etc. by recovering sulfides in the form of re-utilizable elemental sulfure by using a small, inexpensive regeneration apparatus, by mixing air or oxygen in a quantity sufficient to inhibit the formation of SO2 with steam for regeneration.
CONSTITUTION: In a process for reconverting iron sulfide into original iron oxide comprising contacting iron oxide catalyst to be regenerated with steam, air or oxygen in a quantity sufficient to inhibit the formation of SO2 by directly reacting iron sulfide with oxygen is mixed with steam 10 for regeneration. By the reaction represented by reaction formulas I and II, elemental sulfur 12 and other components 13 consisting of water, a small quantity of SO2 and other materials can be recovered from a gas recovery tower 5. According to this method, it is possible to reduce the side and the cost of the regeneration apparatus and at the same time, most of the recovered materials can be recovered in the form of elemental sulfur which is particularly preferred for reuse and hence, cost for refining gas obtd. by the gasification of coal, etc. can be reduced.
