PURPOSE: To obtain a modified polyester resin excellent in pigment dispersion stability and surface lustrousness of paint film, by condensation of a specific polybasic acid and a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of a compound capable of forming a sulfonic acid.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of a polyester by condensation of a polybasic acid containing a polycarboxylic acid and/or polyol having 3 or more functional groups and a polyhydric alcohol, a compound capable of forming a sulfonic acid upon reaction with an alcohol or carboxylic acid having one or more sulfonic acid groups or hydroxyl or carboxyl groups of a polyester resin is added to the reaction system at any stage of the condensation reaction to obtain a modified polyester resin. The modified polyester resin is the one containing as resin-forming components polycarboxylic acid and/or polyol of 3 or more functional groups and also sulfonic acid groups.
