PURPOSE: To obtain excellent electrostatic charging characteristic and to satisfactorily and stably electrostatically charge a body to be electrostatically charged by changing the work function of an electrostatic charging member in accordance with positive or negative in the case of electrostatically charging the body to be electrostatically charged.
CONSTITUTION: The electrostatic charging member 1 obtained by coating the outer peripheral surface of a roller-like base substance 2 equipped with a core bar with a facing layer 3 is allowed to abut on the body to be electrostatically charged 4 such as a photo-sensitive drum, etc., and voltage is impressed between the member 1 and the body 4 by a power source 5, so that the body 4 is electrostatically charged. In such a case, the elelctrostatic charging is performed while the member 1 and the body 4 are rotated in an opposite direction, whereby the entire surface of the body 4 is electrostatically charged. The member 1 is formed by selecting a material so that the work function of the member 1 may be smaller than that of the body 4 in the case of electro-statically charging the body 4 to be negative, and the work function of the member 1 may be larger than that of the body 4 in the case of electrostatically charging the body 4 to be positive.
