PURPOSE: To efficiently produce an olefin polymer hardly leaving behind ashes or toxic matters when burned by using a catalyst system which has a high activity even though it does not contain expensive aluminoxane and which does not exhibit decrease in activity caused by a Lewis base, such as an amine, produced as a by-product.
CONSTITUTION: An olefin polymer is produced by polymerizing an olefin alone or together with at least one compd. selected from the group consisting of an arom. vinyl compd. a diene compd., and an acetylene compd. in the presence of a polymn. catalyst comprising a transition metal compd. having a π-ligand, an ionic compd. of a noncoordinating anion with a cation of a typical element of group 4 of the periodic table, and a Lewis acid if necessary.
