PURPOSE: To reduce the wear of a head in the initial running stage of a magnetic tape by burnishing the surface of the magnetic layer of the magnetic tape with an abrasive tape containing one or more kinds of abrasives which are higher in Moh's hardness than the abrasive contained in the magnetic layer.
CONSTITUTION: A laminated body delivered from a delivery roll 1 is wound around a take-up roll 5 after the body is polished with an abrasive tape 2, burnished with a fixed blade 3, and wiped with a wiping material 4. The tape 2 performs the burnishing operation while it is moved by means of a rotating roll 8 in the direction opposite to the delivering direction of the laminated body at a speed of 1-3cm/min and pressed against the laminated body by means of a pad 6 so that the tape 3 can be brought into contact with the surface of the magnetic layer of the laminated body. Since the surface of the magnetic layer is burnished by means of the tape 3 containing at least one kind of abrasive which is higher in Moh's harness than the abrasive contained in the magnetic layer, the wear of a head, especially, in the initial running stage of the magnetic tape can be reduced.
