PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel formulations of volatile anesthetics and methods of use for treating an inflammation or wound.SOLUTION: In a composition, a component of an emulsion comprising a lipid, such as soybean oil or olive oil, is a solution comprising: an effective amount of a volatile anesthetic, such as isoflurane, halothane, enflurane or sevoflurane, dissolved in an aqueous solution; and a solvent to reduce the volatility, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide or ethanol. A method comprises administering the composition via a topical, intrathecal, epidural, transdermal, topical, oral, intra-articular, mucosal, buccal, rectal, vaginal, intramuscular, intravesical or subcutaneous route.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
