Abstract:

To provide a nucleic acid segment encoding a new HAS (hyaluronate synthase) relating to Pasteurella multocida which is an agricultural pathogen of poultry, domestic animals, sheep and pig.

There provided are the nucleic acid segment having a coding region segment encoding an enzymatically active bacterial multocida hyaluronate synthase (PmHAS), the use of this nucleic acid segment in the preparation of recombinant cells which produce hyaluronate synthase and its hyaluronic acid product, and the use of the PmHAS in constructing "knock-out" mutant strains of P. multocida for use in vaccinations. The use of the PmHAS in diagnostic tests in the field determinations of P. multocida infection of livestocks is also provided.
