PURPOSE: To obtain an optical repeater with 2R and pseudo 3R function using effectively the speediness of light by extracting the clock signal of an optical signal by an optical oscillator filter whose resonance frequency interval is set at an integral multiple or a reciprocal multiple of an integer of the transmission speed.
CONSTITUTION: An optical soliton pulse PSi with jitter Δt is transmitted on an optical fiber 1 for transmission at a long distance, and a part of it is branched to an optical fiber 2 for branch. A branched optical pulse is made incident on an FP or a ring oscillation type semiconductor light amplifier 4. Assuming the fundamental transmission speed of the optical soliton pulse as f0 and a time slot as T(=1/f0), an incident optical pulse is emitted as a clock reproducing optical pulse string Pet in which the jitter Δt is compensated by multipath reflection in the amplifier 4 by setting optical resonance length L so as to set the resonance frequency interval Δf equal to f0, and it is made incident on an electric absorptive modulator 5 via an HPT 6. A timing- reproduced optical pulse Pso without having jitter can be emitted by transmitting the pulse on the fiber 1, and adjusting a voltage so as to be applied to the modulator 5 with the intermediate phase of an optical signal pulse P1 passing a light amplifier 3.
