Abstract:
PURPOSE:To reduce deterioration in the S/N due to tapping by copying information on the intensity of signal light or the number of signal photons into the phase of probe light by optical Kerr effect, and detecting the phase of the probe light and tapping the information of the signal light. CONSTITUTION:The signal light and probe light are mixed through a 1st mirror 11 into nearly the same beam, which is passed through an optical Kerr medium which satisfies an inequality I, where L is the length (km), alpha is the coefficient of loss (m<-1>), and (x) is the tertiary nonlinear optical constant; and the signal light and probe light are split by a 2nd mirror 13 similar to the 1st mirror 11, the split signal light is used as projection light as it is, and the split probe light is homodyne-detected to measure the phase of the probe light. In the inequality I, (c) is the light velocity under a vacuum, epsilon the dielectric constant of the Kerr medium, and epsilon0 is the dielectric constant under a vacuum. Namely, the information is copied by Kerr effect. Consequently, the deterioration is S/N due to the tapping is reduced.
