The plasma display device includes: a total cell lighting rate detection circuit which detects a ratio of discharge cells to be lit to all discharge cells in a display region of a plasma display panel, as a total cell lighting rate; and a partial lighting rate detection circuit which detects a ratio of discharge cells to be lit to discharge cells in each of a plurality of regions into which the display region is divided, as a partial lighting rate. A plurality of sustain pulses different by lengths of at least one of rise periods and fall periods are generated, and a plurality of driving patterns different by combinations of sustain pulses are generated, and the plurality of driving patterns are switched in accordance with the total cell lighting rate and the partial lighting rate to generate sustain pulses, and transition areas are provided between adjacent driving patterns of driving patterns arranged on a plane with the total cell lighting rate and the partial lighting rate as two axes, to generate sustain pulses.
