A plasma display apparatus includes an all-cell lighting rate detection circuit for detecting the rate of discharge cells to be turned on to all discharge cells in a display area of a plasma display panel as an all-cell lighting rate in each sub-field and a partial lighting rate detection circuit for detecting the rate of discharge cells to be turned on to discharge cells in each area as a partial lighting rate in each area and in each sub-field, by dividing the display area of the plasma display panel into a plurality of areas. In a maintenance period, at least one of a rising period for driving a power recovery circuit in order to raise a maintenance pulse and a falling period for driving the power recovery circuit in order to fall the maintenance pulse is controlled in accordance with the all-cell lighting rate outputted from the all-cell lighting rate detection circuit and the partial lighting rate output from the partial lighting rate detection circuit.
