Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To constitute a small-sized and compact polarizing illuminator which has an integrator optical system and a polarized light converting optical system combined and has a high light utilization efficiency.
SOLUTION: A polarizing illuminator 1 is provided with a light source part 2, which emits light having random directions of polarization, a first lens plate 3 which is constituted of many rectangular condenser lenses, having rectangular external forms and converges light emitted from the light source to form many secondary light source images, and a second lens plate 4, which is places in the vicinity of positions where the secondary light source images are formed and is provided with a condenser lens array, a polarized light separating prism array 420, a λ/2-phase difference plate 430, and an exit-side lens 440. Polarized light is separated at a stage, where minute secondary light source images are formed by the first lens plate 3 constituting the integrator optical system. Thus spatial spread of the optical path accompanied with separation of polarized light is suppressed to miniaturize the polarizing illuminator, regardless of the provision of the polarized light converting optical system.
