To shorten a time of position detection in a position detecting method for obtaining a signal arrival time between a plurality of base stations around a terminal and the terminal by principles of triangulation, in a position detecting system for detecting the position of a terminal in a radio communication system.
In this system, a means for creating a database in which information of receiving power of a signal to be transmitted between the plurality of base stations around the terminal and the terminal is correlated to the position information of the terminal, and for obtaining the position information by database retrieval from the reception power information to be acquired at the time of position detection; and a means for obtaining the position using the signal arrival time; are processed in parallel, thereby realizing shortening the position detecting time using the means by which the position information has been obtained earlier. Also, using the reception power information, the retrieval range of a solution is narrowed in calculating the position using the signal arrival time, and the correspondence between the position information obtained by position detection using the difference in signal arrival time and the reception power information is recorded in the database, thereby automatically performing creation/update of the database.
