Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a carbonyl compound, useful as an industrial intermediate, or its acetal in one step and in high yield, by treating easily available mercaptal S,S'-dioxide with TiCl3 in an aqueous solvent or an alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula II or formula III is obtained by treating mercaptal S,S'-dioxide of formula I (R, R1=H, alkyl, aromatic group etc.; R2=alkyl, aryl) with TiCl3 in the presence of an aqueous solvent or an alcohol of formula R3OH (R3=alkyl). When an alcohol is used, an acetal of formula III which can be readily transformed to a carbonyl of formula X by the hydrolysis is obtained. The compound of formula I can be readily obtained by, e.g. the oxidation of mercaptal or mercaptal S-oxide with an oxidizer.
