Abstract:
PURPOSE: To prepare a low-toxic, easily recoverable fixed cryptand useful as a phase-transfer catalyst, a heavy metal scavenger, etc., by reacting chloromethylated crosslinked polystyrene with hydroxymethyl cryptand.
CONSTITUTION: Chloromethylated crosslinked polystyrene pref. having a degree of crosslinking of ≥1% is made to react with hydroxymethyl cryptand of formula (n is 1,2) at 0W100°C for 5W100 hours. The crosslinking of the polystyrene is carried out using a crosslinking agent such as divinylbenzene, diacrylic acid ethyleneglycol ester, etc. When the crosslinking degree is lower than 1%, the styrene swells with organic solvents, and is not suitable for using as a phase transfer catalyst in an organic phase.
