PURPOSE: To obtain urethanes and carbonates useful in the production of a polymer, etc., in an efficient and safe manner by allowing an amine to react with CO2 in the presence of an N-contg. compd. such as an amidine and allowing the resultant ammonium carbamate salt to react with a hydrocarbyl halide.
CONSTITUTION: An amine such as N-ethyl(benzyl)amine or an alcohol or amino- alcohol such as benzyl alcohol or a mixture of them is allowed to react with CO2 in the presence of a highly basic N-contg. compd. selected from among amidine and guanidine type bases to form the corresponding ammonium carbamate salt or carbonate salt and this salt is allowed to react with a prim. or sec. hydrocarbyl halide in a polar aprotic solvent selected from among dimethyl sulfoxide, DMF, acetonitrile and N-methylpyrrolidone to obtain the objective compds.
