To obtain the subject polycarbonate having excellent hue and heat resistance, slightly generating a gelatinized substance by reacting a carboxylic acid diester with bisphenol A having restricted contents of a specific chroman- based organic compound and iron.
(A) A carboxylic acid diester of formula I (E is a monofunctional aliphatic or a monofunctional aromatic group) (e.g. diphenyl carbonate or the like) is reacted with (B) bisphenol A having ≤200 ppm chroman-based organic compound of formula II [R1 to R5 are each H, a 1-8C alkyl or an aromatic group; R6 is H, a 1-8C alkyl, a substituent group of formula III (R7 to R9 are each H, a 1-8C alkyl or the like; (m) is 0-5; (n) is 0-5) or the like] and ≤0.1 ppm iron content preferably by using a catalyst (e.g. cesium carbonate or the like) to give the objective polycarbonate.
