To profitably obtain the subject compound useful as a medicine, especially an antibiotic, in water solvent having no problem on safety by reacting a specific 3-cephem-4-carboxylate (salt) with an acid chloride in the water.
This method for producing a cephem compound of formula IV comprises reacting a 3-cephem-4-carboxylate (salt) of formula I (R2 is carboxyl, carboxyl anion; R3 is a lower alkyl, a halogen, a lower acyloxyalkyl, etc.,) with an acid chloride of the formula: R1COCl {R1 is a group of formula II [A is N, methine; B is a lower alkoxy, a halogenated lower alkoxy, triphenylmethoxy, a lower alkyl, a lower acyloxy, a group of the formula: C(CH3)2COOR (R is H, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, an organic cation)] or a group of formula III} in water. Thus, the objective cephem compound of formula IV especially useful as an antibiotic can profitably be obtained.
