PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the operation for a long period and produce the subject copolymer excellent in appearance properties, thermal stability and transparency of molding products by effectively removing the heat of polymerization and suppressing the production of a gel-like polymer.
SOLUTION: When the bulk or solution copolymerization of a monomer composed of 5-60 pts.wt. vinyl cyanide-based monomer, 40-95 pts.wt. aromatic vinylic monomer and 0-20 pts.wt. other copolymerizable vinylic monomers is carried out, (A) a reactional solution comprising 100 pts.wt. monomer and 10-100 pts.wt. organic solvent is filled in forced stirred reactional vessel having ≥2kW/m3 power requirement of an impeller with a remaining vapor phase part so that an interface between the reactional solution and the vapor phase may be present and (B) a polymerization initiator having ≤75 cross-linking efficiency ε=100×(a/b) ([(a) is the concentration (mol/L) of a cumene dimer produced when dissolving the polymerization initiator in the cumene at 0.5mmol/ L connection and heating the resultant solution at 110°C for a time of 6 times that of the half-life of the polymerization initiator at 110°C; (b) is 0.5×10-3(mol/L)] is used as the polymerization initiator.
