To enable the regeneration of a thermally deteriorated catalyst made impossible heretofore.
In a catalyst used in a method for reducing and removing NOx in an exhaust gas using ammonia as a reducing agent, vanadium oxide being the active component of the catalyst is flocculated during the long-term use of the catalyst at a high temperature, and the catalyst lowered in its activity is washed with an acid aqueous solution with a pH of 6 or below, preferably 4 or below. By this washing, vanadium oxide being the flocculated active component is mainly eluted and removed, and vanadium oxide being the active component is subsequently supported again. The washing using the acid aqueous solution or an alkali aqueous solution exerts no effect on the mechanical strengths of the catalyst.
