Abstract:

PURPOSE:To improve substantially a ship's propulsion performance by enabling a sail to work as a blade through the installation of front and aft rotors on a sail mast so erected on a ship's upper deck as to be rotatable and the setting of an endless type sail canvas to said rotors. CONSTITUTION:A sail mast 16 is so erected on the upper deck 5 of a ship as to be driven for the turn thereof. The sail mast 16 is provided with a frame construction 7, an upper frame 9 and a lower frame 8, and front and aft rotors 10 and 11 are axially supported fore and aft of the frame construction 7 between said frames 9 and 8. And an endless type sail canvas 6 is so set to the rotors 10 and 11 as to enclose the frame construction 7. The whole of the sail between the upper and the lower frames 9 and 8 is adjusted to give an optimum sail angle with a gear device for generating a maximum dynamic force depending upon a wind direction.
