To highly precisely print a sheet like an index tab sheet without requiring troublesome operations at high speed, by easily correcting skew of the sheet.
The sheet conveying apparatus includes a plurality of conveying rollers 101 disposed in a direction crossing a conveying direction of the sheet S and conveying the sheet, and corrects skew of the sheet by differentiating the conveying speeds of the conveying rollers from each other. First and second detection sensors 103 are disposed in a direction crossing the conveying direction of the sheet. A skew correction drive controller 1a clocks a leading edge detection time after any one of the detection sensors detects the leading edge of the sheet until the other sensor detects the leading edge of the sheet, to find the amount of skew of the sheet as a leading edge skew amount according to the leading edge detection time. When the leading edge skew amount is not smaller than a first skew threshold value, the skew correction drive controller 1a obtains a correction skew amount by correcting the leading end skew amount according to the sheet information showing the shape of the sheet, and changes the conveying speed of the conveying rollers according to the corrected skew amount.
