PURPOSE: To suppress luminance flicker and chrominance flicker by employing a solid-state image pickup element capable of electronic shutter operation whose sensor section is provided with a storage section storing tentatively a signal charge subject to photoelectric conversion.

CONSTITUTION: A light from an object is received by a lens 11 and made incident onto an image section of a CCD solid-state image pickup element 13 via an optical filter 12. The CCD element 13 is driven by a drive circuit 15 based on various timing signals generated by a timing generating circuit 14, an output signal of the CCD element 13 is processed by a signal processing circuit 16 and led out as a video output. The timing generating circuit 14 controls a generating timing of a shutter pulse SUB and a read pulse SG to set an exposure period for plural number of times per field. In order to expose some points of a luminescent timing of a fluorescent light, reflection back of chroma information is reduced to suppress luminance flicker and chroma flicker.
