PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for forging excellent in strength, durability and gas cutting property.SOLUTION: The steel for forging has a composition containing a C element, a Si element, a Mn element, a Cu element, a Ni element, a Cr element, a Mo element, a V element, a N element, an Al element, a S element and an O element and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, main body of a metallic structure of a bainite structure, average lath width of 3.0 μm or less and satisfies the following formula (1) and (2). 1.15≥C+Si/24+Mn/6+Ni/40+Cr/5+Mo/4+V/14≥0.89 (1). 0.53≥C+Si/30+Mn/20+Ni/60+Cr/20+Mo/15+V/10≥0.40 (2).SELECTED DRAWING: None
