PURPOSE: To improve safety and reliability by cooling a superconductor with gas thereby preventing explosive evaporation of liquid refrigerant upon quenching.
CONSTITUTION: Gas 8 is cooled below the critical temperature of a superconductor 1 through a cooler 4 and cools the superconductor 1. A container 5 is provided with a safety valve 6 in order to cope with pressure rise. The container 5 is provided with a vacuum layer 7 at the outside thereof. The superconductor 1 converts to a resistor, upon quenching, to produce heat but when a circuit breaker functions, it is cooled with the cooling gas 8 and converted into a superconductor. Since liquid refrigerant is not employed, accident due to explosive evaporation of liquid refrigerant can be prevented even when the circuit breaker does not function.
