Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce alkylbenzoquinone by anodically oxidizing alkylphenolsulfonic acid represented by a specified formula in an acidic aq. soln. CONSTITUTION:Alkylphenolsulfonic acid (salt) represented by the formula (where R is 1-3C alkyl, n=1, 2 or 3 and X is H, Na, K or NH4), e.g., 2,3,6- trimethylphenolsulfonic acid is anodically oxidized in an acidic aq. soln. adjusted to about 4 pH with sulfuric acid or the like at about 1-50wt.% concn. in an electrolytic cell. At this time, a Ti or Pt electrode is preferably used as the anode, a Pt or C electrode as the cathode and about 10-80wt.% solvent such as methanol or acetone is preferably added to the anode chamber. The bath voltage is regulated to about 0.5-10V terminal voltage, electric current is supplied by >= about 4 Faraday/mol at about 0.2-30A/dm<2> current density and the electrolytic oxidation temp. is regulated to about 0-60 deg.C. Thus, 2,3,5- trimethylbenzoquinone useful as a synthetic intermediate of vitamin E is produced.
