Abstract:

To obtain a new triphenylene derivative liquid crystal compound having good photoconductive characteristics at lower temperature and good moldability into photoconductive layers.

This compound is a compound expressed by formula I (Rs are each a 2-20C alkyl; X is F, Cl or the like; Y is one of OR and X; Z is one of OR and X), e.g. 3,6,7,10,11-pentapentyloxytriphenylen-2-yl-pivaloate. A compound expressed by formula IV, which is an illustrative compound of formula I, is obtained by reacting a hydroxylated triphenylene derivative of formula II (Ya' and Za' are each hydroxy or the like) with tetrazole, followed by reduction through hydrogenation in the presence of a palladium catalyst to form an intermediate of formula III (Yb and Zb are each H or OR), and then by reacting the compound of formula III with a compound of the formula: Xa-Nu(Nu is a halogen, etc.; Xa is F, Cl or the like).
