To provide a variable valve gear of an internal combustion engine, reducing the frequency of a time period until engine stop gets long following fixed operation of valve timing in engine stop, and inhibiting the deterioration of responsiveness to a demand for changing the valve timing during engine operation.
The variable valve gear includes a valve timing variable mechanism 40 changing the valve timing VT of an intake valve, a phase fixing mechanism 50 fixing the valve timing VT at an intermediate angle VTmd1 by a fixing pin 51, and a phase restraint mechanism 60 restraining the valve timing VT from changing to a retard side beyond a retard restraint angle VTrgtL by a restraining pin 61. On the presence of an idle operation demand, the operation position of the fixing pin 51 is kept at a release position and the operation position of the restraining pin 61 is kept at a restraining position.
