A hydrogen storage alloy contained in this alloy powder for electrodes contains elements L, M, Ni, Co and E. The element L contains La as an essential constituent, and does not contain Nd, or in cases where Nd is contained, the ratio of Nd in the element L is 5% by mass or less. In addition, the element M contains at least Mg and the element E contains at least Mn, and the molar ratio α1 of Mg in the total of the elements L and M satisfies 0.000 <α1 ≤ 0.050. The molar ratio x of Ni to the total of the elements L and M satisfies 3.50 ≤ x ≤ 4.32; the molar ratio y of Co to the total of the elements L and M satisfies 0.13 ≤ y ≤ 0.50; x, y and the molar ratio z of the element E satisfy 4.78 ≤ x + y + z < 5.03; and the ratio of y to the molar ratio β of Mn to the total of the elements L and M, namely the ratio y/β satisfies 0.80 ≤ y/β ≤ 1.50.
