Abstract:

An automatic tool exchange mechanism and an automatic tool exchange method which has a spindle mechanism (11) including at least a spindle (11a) and a first gear wheel (11b) rotating integrally with the spindle; a spindle motor (12) rotating the spindle; a tool magazine (20) including a container (20b) containing a plurality of tools (21), a second gear wheel (20c) rotating integrally with the container, and a slider (20e) slidably mounted on the spindle mechanism; an Z-axis motor (19a) for moving the spindle mechanism in the Z-axis direction; and a restricting member (23) restricting the X-axis movement of the tool magazine; and which has the steps of disengaging the first and second gear wheels during working, rotating the spindle at a predetermined speed by the spindle motor, machining with a tool mounted on the spindle, engaging the first and second gear wheels when exchanging the tools and rotating the spindle motor to position the tool magazine to index the desired new tool.
