Abstract:
The present invention provides: a coating agent which is reduced in the methanol content; an adhesive which uses this coating agent and exhibits excellent coatability and adhesiveness; and a coated material which exhibits excellent water resistance and alcohol resistance. The present invention relates to a coating agent which contains a modified vinyl alcohol polymer (A) that has a content (X) of a structural unit, which is derived from a derivative (a) of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, of from 0.05% by mole to 10% by mole (inclusive), a saponification degree of from 80.0% by mole to 99.9% by mole (inclusive), a methanol content of less than 3.0% by mass as determined by head space gas chromatography, and a content of components that are insoluble in an aqueous solution having a concentration of 5% by mass at 90°C of 0.1 ppm or more but less than 2,000 ppm.
