This invention provides a coating film for optical compensation at low cost without providing a troublesome film forming step, and an optical element having the same properties as attained by the provision of film application step despite the fact that any troublesome work of film application and the like is not required. There is also provided a method for the formation of a coating film for optical compensation. In the coating film, the value obtained by (n_x + n_y)/2 - n_z is negative, and the absolute value is larger. In the equation, n_x represents the maximum in-plane refractive index, n_y represents the minimum in-plane refractive index, n_z represents the refractive index in thickness-wise direction, and d represents the film thickness. An optical element may be produced by using the method for the formation of a coating film. The coating film for optical compensation is characterized by comprising any polymer of cellulose N-substituted carbamate or an aromatic vinyl polymer.
