A gas insulated switchgear comprising a fixed-side electrode and a movable-side electrode arranged opposite to each other in a container filled with insulating gas, wherein the fixed-side electrode has a fixed-side energizing contact formed tubularly and a fixed-side shield for containing the fixed-side energizing contact, and the movable-side electrode has a movable conductor being driven by a driver to touch the fixed-side energizing contact or to separate therefrom.  A disk-like fixed-side arc shield including an arc resistant member having an opening with a diameter larger than the outside diameter of the movable conductor is provided on the side of the fixed-side shield facing the movable-side electrode, and the fixed-side arc shield is formed in the shape of a thin plate so that an arc is restricted to the vicinity of the opening after a magnetic flux is generated on the surface in the circumferential direction by feeding an arc current radially outward when the fixed-side energizing contact and the movable conductor are opened, and then a force is allowed to act on the arc by the magnetic flux in the direction of the central axis.
