Abstract:
When a compression ratio of an internal combustion engine is locked at high ratio condition, the engine can be operated while avoiding the occurrence of knocking. The engine has a mechanism capable of changing a compression ratio. The mechanism changes, when a compression ratio is detected that it is locked at a high ratio, the driving timing of suction and exhaust valves is changed to the side where suction air to be compressed in a combustion chamber is lowered. Alternatively, a suction air temperature or coolant temperature can be lowered, or further, a speed reduction ratio of a speed changer can be switched to a larger value so that a rotational speed of the engine is increased. This makes knocking unlikely to occur, enabling the engine to run with knocking being prevented from occurring even if a compression ratio is locked at a high ratio.
